P&L Motorsports 2008 STI Stage 1.5 Package

P&L 2008+ Stage 1.5 Dyno Plot The 2008+ Subaru Impreza STI has been a technological tour de force as far as Subarus are concerned. However, many new owners report that the car is just not as sooth, responsive and powerful as they were expecting. That got us thinking. We have people who call up from all over the country, and various parts of the world, who want our in house tuner to give their cars his own personal touch. The problem is, to PROPERLY do it, you need to be with the car. No matter how good a remote tune is, there is a subjective element lost that no log can ever hope to duplicate.

So, how do you go about trying to give people a refined, yet conservative taste of what P&L Motorsports is capable of? Simple!

  • First off, control the quality of the products being used. P&L Motorsports fabricates and manufactures all products on site, by hand, with a tremendous level of personal pride and quality control on each and every piece created by our Master Fabricators and Artisans.
  • Secondly, reduce the amount of parts that change. By doing so, we not only eliminate the possibility for installer/user error, but we invoke the "less is more" mentality.
  • Finally, produce an engine management calibration that has been tested for drivability, reliability, conservatism, and fuel economy.

The map produced for this package has been designed with three overwhelming mandates above all else:

  • UNCOMPROMISED drivability and refinement, above all else.
  • RELIABLE, and REPEATABLE power delivery.
  • SIGNIFICANT increases in fuel economy.

In the words of our tuner, Jorge:

"If a car doesn't inspire proper road manners, refined feel, and overwhelming confidence, it doesn't matter if it makes 5,000 horsepower to the wheels; If you're always worried its going to fall apart every time you hit the gas, I've done you no favor! Frankly, everything else is a very VERY distant second. I'm a publically outspoken critic of 'off the shelf' maps, but feel that in such a light setup, with a mild tune there is enough left on the table to still please, without having a chance of risking someone's $40,000 pride and joy. That being said, don't expect a 'stage 2', anything beyond this WILL need to be tuned in person to guarantee this level of excellence!"

This is a taste of the 'P&L Motorsports tuning style' that people from all over have praised for years.

This map is ONLY available in this package, is not available for download, and is only loadable on the AccessPort it is sold with. So, short of driving here, this is your chance to experience the hype! Get you own P&L Stage 1.5 Package here!

SI Drive - Our proof of concept:

When SI drive was first introduced, a lot of people heralded it as a relatively mundane and useless feature. At P&L Motorsports, we really spent a LARGE amount of time figuring out exactly how the system works, and how we can use it to our end.

Effectively, you have three completely different driving experiences with SI drive.

P&L 2008+ Stage 1.5 S-Drive Plots
  • Sport Sharp is tuned to offer the most responsive, powerful, and "connected" feel possible. Boost is limited to 17-18.5 PSI, tapering to redline. (Max WHP 286.67 / Max Torque 294.92)
  • Sport is designed to be a more fuel economic, and progressive power delivery option. For most, this will be the map of choice, as it offers a powerful driving experience, while still offering uncompromised refinement and throttle delivery. Boost is limited to 14.5-16 PSI tapering to redline. (Max WHP 265.51 / Max Torque 268.48)
  • Intelligent is the fuel miser. Its mapped to reduce overall power output to well over 100 lb/ft less torque versus sport sharp. Intelligent is going to have more of a naturally aspirated feel, progressively ramping up to the sport peak power level. Fuel economy is maximized in city/highway conditions. This map also works as a valet map. Under 5k RPM, the car is extremely tame in terms of power delivery, but ramping power back up is as simple as downshifting to a lower gear. We've had customers report anywhere from 20-25 MPG in straight stop and go, inner city traffic, to 25-35 MPG on sustained highway trips. Boost starts at 2-4 PSI, and slowly ramps back up to 11-13 PSI by redline. (Max WHP 262.91 / Max Torque 265.48)

Frequently Asked Questions:

Q: I was thinking of modifying my car. What's involved and what should I know?

A: As this is a frequent question, we've prepared a document you can read outlining several points about the tuning process. You can download it at this link (called "Caring for your Vehicle"). It's in Adobe Acrobat (PDF) format. If you need Adobe Acrobat reader, please click here to download it.

Q: I've heard that one engine management solution makes more power then others.

A: In the end, and with very rare exceptions, not really... Yes really! Stuff like fuel, timing, boost pressure, etc. all add up to the same result even if the management platform used changes. FEATURES and drivability adaptability are the thing that end up changing. Give us a call for a more thorough recommendation on what would best suit your application.

Q: What is covered in your tuning class?

A: Our feature rich class covers everything from initial vehicle inspection, to map descriptions, map setup, tuning concepts, and diagnosis. Since the class is geared as a one on one, class size is limited to 2 people at a time.

Q: Do you tune with any of the 'OpenECU' tools?

A: No, our testing has shown that while the tools have matured, there are still some functions at their core that have not worked properly. As a result, the extent of our integration with those tools are limited to augmenting piggyback and hybrid EMS solutions (I.E. TurboXS UTEC), or very limited circumstances (call for details).

Q: Do you tune with E85?

A: In certain circumstances, with the proper customer prep and tools, we do offer tuning on E85.  Mandatory fuel systems upgrades are to be sized 40% larger then what would have normally been used for the modifications on the vehicle.  Also, mandatory are a "Lambda" reading AFR gauge, and EGT gauge.  Please contact us for more details.  E85 tuning on top of pump gas tuning usually adds another 1-1.5 hours of tuning time.

Q: What makes of cars do you tune?

A: We've done work on Honda, Acura, Nissan, BMW, Mitsubishi, Subaru, VW, and Suzuki

Q: How long does it take to tune a car?

A: If the car is in proper mechanical working condition: AP tunes will take about an hour to an hour and a half on average, Open source tunes will take about 1.5 to 3 hours, and Standalone tunes (I.E. AEM EMS, Hydra Nemesis) will take 2 hours and up, depending on the quality of the included base map and goal for the vehicle.

At the end of the day, a tuner can only tune what he can touch. So, if you're looking for a non-compromised experience in several different scenarios, then you need to invest the time into tuning it.
